Evolution of Online Gaming in India | Explained

Online gaming in India has experienced a significant surge, especially amid the pandemic, leading to a boom in the industry. This surge has been fueled by various factors, including increased time spent indoors, the closure of traditional entertainment avenues, and the widespread adoption of smartphones and high-speed internet connectivity. The growth in online gaming has not only provided entertainment but has also opened up avenues for education and skill development.

Highlights of the Day

1.India's Interim Budget 2024-25: A Pioneering Push for Women's Health Through HPV Vaccination

The interim Union Budget 2024-25 in India demonstrates a significant commitment to women's health, particularly through the support for vaccinating girls against cervical cancer. Cervical cancer remains a major health concern for women in India, and the budget's focus on HPV vaccination aligns with global targets for disease prevention. Successful models from countries like Bhutan and Sikkim highlight the importance of effective communication in vaccination campaigns. The development of an indigenous vaccine, Cervavac, and the potential inclusion of adolescent boys in the program further strengthen India's efforts. Challenges such as vaccine hesitancy and equitable access require collaborative efforts for success[1].

2. Decoding Indian Women's Employment Trends: Beyond Fluctuations to Real Challenges

The debate on trends in Indian women's employment, based on data from National Sample Surveys and Periodic Labour Force Surveys, highlights fluctuations in the work participation rate. The narratives range from pessimistic views linking the decline to job availability to optimistic perspectives attributing it to growing prosperity. However, a deeper analysis reveals that most changes are driven by shifts in women's work on family farms. Challenges in survey methodologies and declining data quality add complexity to the interpretation. Attention is urged to focus on expanding women's opportunities outside of agriculture, aiming for better-paying and diverse employment options[2].

3. ISRO and Tribal Affairs Ministry Collaborate to Bring Internet Services to Remote Tribal Villages

The Tribal Affairs Ministry plans to collaborate with ISRO to deploy VSAT stations for Internet services in 80 tribal villages in Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Maharashtra. ISRO chief S. Somnath confirmed the collaboration, aiming to provide pilot connectivity, including internet, medical, and educational services, to geographically remote and challenging terrains. Proposals for projects with AIIMS Delhi, IIT Delhi, IIM Calcutta, and IISc Bengaluru were also discussed, covering research on tribal health, setting up specialized departments, and training facilities. The pilot project aims to enable e-governance in these areas and can be scaled up to similar tribal villages nationwide.[3].

4.RBI and Bank Indonesia Sign MOU to Boost Cross-Border Transactions with Local Currencies

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Bank Indonesia (BI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a framework promoting the use of Indian Rupee (INR) and Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) for cross-border transactions. The agreement enables exporters and importers to invoice and pay in their domestic currencies, facilitating the development of an INR-IDR foreign exchange market. This move aims to optimize transaction costs and settlement time, covering current and capital account transactions. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das and Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo signed the MoU, emphasizing its role in enhancing bilateral cooperation and promoting trade[4].

5. Upskilling for Equality: Insights from a Women-Centric Report

Key findings from a report indicate that upskilling is perceived as essential for women to align with modern workplace opportunities. Respondents observe an increase in women's representation in leadership positions and cite lack of time as a primary barrier to upskilling. The report highlights that women are inclined to invest in upskilling for career growth, with a significant number believing in equal workplace opportunities. In another context, Thailand has reportedly objected to India's customs regulations from 2020 during the India-ASEAN FTA review, raising concerns about the growing trade deficit and the influence of China in the region[5].
