Highlights of the Day

1. India's Q1 GDP Hits 7.8% High, but Weak Monsoon and Inflation Pose Growth Concerns

India's GDP and GVA grew impressively by 7.8% in Q1 of the fiscal year, but concerns arise due to factors like a weak monsoon, high inflation, and global uncertainties that could dampen future growth. Manufacturing rebounded to 4.7% growth after six months of contraction, while agriculture grew by 3.5%. The services sector, particularly financial, real estate, and professional services, saw a significant surge. Some economists view the growth as below expectations, citing weak manufacturing and construction sectors. However, others believe this growth keeps the economy on track for a 6.5% growth rate for the year, though challenges like inflation and global trends may temper it [1].

2. Parliament to Convene Special Session with Unspecified Agenda Following G20 Summit

Parliament is set to reconvene for a special session in September, following the G20 Summit in New Delhi. The session has no specific agenda, and it will be the second such special session held by the government, the last one being in 2017 to roll out the Goods and Services Tax (GST). These special sessions have historically marked significant events such as Independence Day celebrations and the Quit India Movement. The 2017 GST session was attended by notable figures, but some opposition parties boycotted, deeming it a "publicity stunt." Despite criticism, GST was implemented, despite previous opposition from both BJP and Congress [2].

3. Surgical Oncologist Ravi Kannan Receives Ramon Magsaysay Award for Transforming Cancer Care in Assam

Dr. R. Ravi Kannan, Director of Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (CCHRC) in Assam, has been honored with the 2023 Ramon Magsaysay Award for his transformative work in cancer treatment, particularly for the underprivileged. Under Dr. Kannan's leadership, CCHRC evolved into a comprehensive cancer hospital with 28 departments and pro-poor initiatives such as free treatment, lodging, and palliative care. The hospital now offers free or subsidized cancer care to around 5,000 new patients annually, benefiting approximately 20,000 impoverished patients. Dr. Kannan plans to decentralize cancer care by establishing smaller hospitals in various regions to improve accessibility and focus on prevention and treatment [3].

4. India's Indigenous 700 MWe Nuclear Reactor at Kakrapar Achieves Full Capacity Operation

India's Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP3) has achieved full capacity operation of its indigenous 700-megawatt electric (MWe) nuclear reactor. The milestone, hailed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marks a significant development in India's civilian nuclear program. KAPP-3 is India's first 700 MWe unit and the largest indigenously developed variant of the Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR). The 700 MWe capacity is a crucial component of India's plan to expand its nuclear power capacity from 7,480 MWe to 22,480 MWe by 2031. Additionally, the experience gained from this project will benefit future endeavors, including the construction of 900 MWe Pressurised Water Reactors (PWRs) of indigenous design [4].

5. India's Fiscal Deficit for First Four Months of 2023-24 Hits 33.9% of Yearly Target

India's fiscal deficit for the first four months of the 2023-24 fiscal year reached 33.9% of the annual target, totaling ₹6.06 lakh crore. This deficit is higher than the 20.5% recorded during the same period in the previous fiscal year. The government aims to limit the fiscal deficit to 5.9% of GDP for 2023-24, as per the Union Budget. Net tax revenue reached ₹5.83 lakh crore, representing 25% of the budget estimate for the year, compared to 34.4% in the same period last year. Total government expenditure for the period was ₹13.81 lakh crore, equivalent to 30.7% of the budget estimate [5].
